Türkiye offers a compelling blend of culture and history, making it an appealing destination for Portuguese travelers. With 1 million Portuguese citizens traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Türkiye's rich heritage and diverse landscapes particularly attractive.
Türkiye is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to Portugal. In safety rankings, Türkiye is 31st out of 40 countries for walking alone at night, while Portugal ranks 15th. According to the Global Peace Index, Türkiye is ranked 137th out of 160 countries, compared to Portugal's 7th place. Murder rates also reflect this disparity, with Türkiye having a rate of 2.5 per 100,000 people, compared to Portugal's 0.8. Female murder rates are 1.0 in Türkiye and 0.6 in Portugal. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index shows Türkiye facing more challenges with organized crime, scoring higher in various categories such as mafia groups (8.0 for Türkiye vs. 4.5 for Portugal) and state crime (9.0 for Türkiye vs. 4.5 for Portugal). While many tourists visit Türkiye without issues, it's advisable for travelers from Portugal to stay informed and exercise caution.
