Tunisia offers a compelling destination for some Mauritanians, thanks to its rich cultural and natural diversity. The country's historical sites, such as the ruins of Carthage and El Djem, attract those interested in archaeology and history. With a population of around 5 million, a segment of Mauritanians may find Tunisia appealing for its unique tourism experiences.
Tunisia is generally considered a relatively safe destination for tourists, including those coming from Mauritania. According to the Global Peace Index, Tunisia ranks 72nd out of 160 countries, which is better than Mauritania's ranking of 93rd. In terms of crime statistics, Tunisia has a murder rate of 4.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Mauritania's lower rate of 1.0. However, Tunisia has a higher rate of female murders at 1.9, while data for Mauritania is not available. The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Tunisia scores better in several categories, such as mafia groups (1.0 for Tunisia vs. 2.5 for Mauritania) and foreign crime (3.0 for Tunisia vs. 5.0 for Mauritania). However, Tunisia does have higher indices in state crime (5.5) and human smuggling (7.0) compared to Mauritania. Overall, while Tunisia has some crime challenges, it is considered safer than Mauritania based on these indices and statistics. Tourists should remain aware of their surroundings and take standard safety precautions while traveling.
