Turkmenistan offers a unique and understated charm as a travel destination, appealing to a niche audience rather than mass tourism. With a focus on quality accommodations, including a significant number of 4 and 5-star hotels, it presents an exclusive experience. Given that 2.7 million Turks travel abroad annually, a portion may find Turkmenistan an intriguing option to explore.
Turkmenistan is generally considered a relatively safe destination for tourists, including those coming from Türkiye. According to the Global Peace Index, Turkmenistan ranks 80th out of 160 countries, which is significantly better than Türkiye's ranking of 137th. While specific crime data for Turkmenistan is limited, the murder rate is reported at 4.2 per 100,000 people, compared to Türkiye's 2.5. However, Turkmenistan has lower organized crime indices, indicating less prevalence of mafia groups and crime networks compared to Türkiye. Overall, while both countries have their safety concerns, Turkmenistan is perceived as safer based on the Global Peace Index and organized crime statistics. Tourists should still exercise standard precautions while traveling.
