Turkmenistan offers a unique and exclusive travel experience, characterized by its understated charm and potential for discovery. The country features a limited but quality selection of accommodations, with a notable proportion of 4 and 5-star hotels. While it may not attract mass tourism, it could appeal to a segment of the 8.6 million Belgians who travel abroad annually, making it an intriguing option for some Belgian visitors.
Turkmenistan is generally considered a relatively safe destination for tourists, with a Global Peace Index ranking of 80th out of 160 countries. However, it is important to note that this ranking indicates it is not as safe as Belgium, which ranks 16th. When comparing crime statistics, Belgium has a lower murder rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people, while Turkmenistan's rate is higher at 4.2. Additionally, Belgium scores better in various organized crime indices, indicating a more secure environment overall. For example, Belgium's state crime index is 2.0, compared to Turkmenistan's 8.5, suggesting higher levels of state-related crime in Turkmenistan. While Turkmenistan may present certain risks, it is advisable for tourists from Belgium to exercise standard safety precautions and stay informed about local conditions while traveling.
