Syria offers a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty, making it an intriguing option for some Cypriot travelers. With around 500,000 Cypriots traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Syria appealing despite its complex history.
Syria is generally considered unsafe for tourists, especially when compared to Cyprus. While Cyprus ranks 11th in safety among 40 European countries, Syria is ranked 153rd out of 160 countries on the Global Peace Index, indicating significant safety concerns. The murder rate in Syria is 2.2 per 100,000 people, compared to Cyprus's low rate of 1.3. Additionally, organized crime indices show that Syria has higher risks in various categories, such as crime networks (9.0 for Syria vs. 5.0 for Cyprus) and state crime (10.0 for Syria vs. 4.0 for Cyprus). Overall, the safety statistics suggest that tourists from Cyprus should exercise caution and consider the risks before traveling to Syria.
