South Sudan offers untapped potential and natural beauty, making it an emerging destination for some Ugandans. As a young nation, its hospitality industry is still developing but shows promise, appealing to a segment of Uganda's 47 million population.
South Sudan is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to Uganda. According to the Global Peace Index, South Sudan ranks 158th out of 160 countries, while Uganda ranks 124th. The murder rate in South Sudan is significantly higher, at 14.9 per 100,000 people, compared to Uganda's 8.5. Crime statistics indicate that South Sudan faces challenges with organized crime, including higher indices for crime networks (8.0 vs. Uganda's 7.0), state crime (9.0 vs. 7.5), and human trafficking (8.5 vs. 7.0). Although some areas of crime, like the heroin and cocaine trade, show South Sudan performing better, overall, the safety conditions suggest that tourists should exercise caution when considering travel to South Sudan from Uganda.
