Suriname, located on the northeastern coast of South America, offers a unique blend of ecological diversity and rich cultural experiences. While its tourism sector is smaller compared to major global destinations, it remains significant for the country’s economy and international relations. A portion of the 200,000 New Zealanders who travel abroad annually may find Suriname an appealing destination.
Suriname presents some safety concerns for tourists from New Zealand. While New Zealand ranks 4th on the Global Peace Index, Suriname lacks specific data in this area. The murder rate in Suriname is higher at 5.7 per 100,000 people compared to New Zealand's 2.6. Additionally, various crime indices indicate that Suriname faces challenges with organized crime, state crime, and drug trafficking, with scores indicating a worse situation than in New Zealand. For instance, Suriname has a state crime index of 8.0 (where 10 is the worst) and a cocaine trade index of 8.5. Tourists should exercise caution and stay informed about local conditions when visiting Suriname.
