Suriname offers a unique blend of ecological diversity and rich cultural heritage, making it an intriguing destination for some Belgian travelers. While its tourism sector is smaller compared to more popular global spots, it plays an important role in the country's economy and international relations. With 8.6 million Belgians traveling abroad annually, there is potential interest among them in exploring Suriname.
Suriname presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly those coming from Belgium. While Belgium ranks 16th in the Global Peace Index and has a low murder rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people, Suriname has a significantly higher murder rate of 5.7. Additionally, crime statistics indicate that Suriname faces challenges with organized crime, with a state crime index of 8.0, compared to Belgium's 2.0. Travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about local conditions. It's advisable to take standard safety precautions, such as avoiding isolated areas at night and being aware of one's surroundings.
