Sudan offers a unique blend of historical richness and archaeological wonders, making it an intriguing destination for some American travelers. With 33.5 million Americans traveling internationally each year, a portion may find Sudan's ancient heritage and contemporary qualities appealing.
Sudan is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to the United States. According to the Global Peace Index, Sudan ranks 159th out of 160 countries, while the U.S. ranks 130th. The murder rate in Sudan is lower than in the U.S., with 5.1 per 100,000 people compared to 6.8 in the U.S. However, various crime indices indicate higher levels of organized crime and state crime in Sudan. For example, Sudan scores 8.0 for state crime and 8.5 for arms trafficking, while the U.S. scores 5.0 and 6.5 respectively. Travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about the current situation before visiting Sudan.
