Rwanda is an appealing destination for some Mozambicans, thanks to its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. Known for its mountain gorillas and stunning landscapes, the country has made significant strides in developing its tourism sector. However, it still faces challenges in maximizing its tourism potential.
Rwanda is generally considered safe for tourists, including those coming from Mozambique. According to the Global Peace Index, Rwanda ranks 90th out of 160 countries, which is better than Mozambique's ranking of 106th. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rates are comparable, with Mozambique at 3.5 per 100,000 people and Rwanda slightly higher at 3.6. However, Rwanda exhibits lower levels of organized crime. For instance, on a scale of 1 (best) to 10 (worst), Rwanda scores significantly better in various categories: mafia groups (1.0 vs. 3.5), crime networks (3.0 vs. 8.0), and drug trafficking (cocaine trade at 2.5 vs. 3.5). Overall, while both countries face challenges, Rwanda is perceived as a safer destination for tourists compared to Mozambique.
