Rwanda, known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," offers rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, making it an appealing destination for international tourists. With its famous mountain gorillas and stunning landscapes, the country has made significant strides in its tourism sector, despite facing some challenges. A portion of the 300,000 Sri Lankans who travel abroad annually may find Rwanda an intriguing option for their travels.
Rwanda is generally considered safe for tourists, including those coming from Sri Lanka. According to the Global Peace Index, Rwanda ranks 90th out of 160 countries, making it safer than Sri Lanka, which ranks 99th. In terms of murder rates, Rwanda has a rate of 3.6 per 100,000 people, slightly higher than Sri Lanka's 3.5. However, crime statistics from the Global Organized Crime Index indicate that Rwanda has lower scores in various crime categories compared to Sri Lanka, suggesting a more secure environment. For instance, Rwanda scores 1.0 for mafia groups and 3.0 for crime networks, while Sri Lanka scores 4.0 and 5.0, respectively. Overall, while no destination is without risk, Rwanda presents a relatively safe option for tourists.
