Rwanda, known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," offers rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, making it an appealing destination for some Burundians. Its famous mountain gorillas and stunning landscapes attract international tourists, and despite facing challenges, the country's tourism sector has shown significant resilience and growth. This makes Rwanda an interesting option for a segment of Burundi's 13 million population.
Rwanda is generally considered safer for tourists compared to Burundi. According to the Global Peace Index, Rwanda ranks 90th out of 160 countries, while Burundi is ranked 127th. The murder rate in Rwanda is lower, at 3.6 per 100,000 people, compared to Burundi's 6.1. In terms of organized crime, both countries have similar scores for mafia presence (1.0), but Rwanda scores better in various categories: crime networks (3.0 vs. 4.5), state crime (5.0 vs. 9.0), human trafficking (5.0 vs. 8.5), and human smuggling (2.5 vs. 5.5). Overall, while no destination is without risks, Rwanda offers a safer environment for tourists coming from Burundi.
