Russia offers a captivating mix of cultural and natural attractions, making it an intriguing destination for some Malaysians. While it attracts around 6.4 million foreign visitors each year, its appeal lies in the diversity of experiences available rather than just the number of tourists. A segment of Malaysia's 34 million population may find Russia particularly appealing.
Russia presents certain safety concerns for tourists from Malaysia. According to safety rankings, Russia is 30th out of 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night. In contrast, Malaysia ranks significantly higher at 10th place globally in the Global Peace Index, where Russia is 154th out of 160 countries. Crime statistics indicate that Russia has a much higher murder rate at 6.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Malaysia's low rate of 0.7. Additionally, organized crime indices show that while both countries have similar scores for mafia presence (4.5), Russia scores worse in areas such as crime networks (7.5) and state crime (8.5). Overall, while tourists can visit Russia, they should remain vigilant and informed about the safety landscape, as it is generally less safe than Malaysia.
