Russia offers a rich blend of cultural and natural attractions, making it an intriguing option for some Icelandic travelers. While around 100,000 Icelanders travel abroad annually, a portion may find Russia appealing among their choices.
Russia presents certain safety concerns for tourists coming from Iceland. According to safety rankings, Russia is placed 30th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, significantly lower than Iceland, which ranks 3rd. The Global Peace Index further highlights this disparity, with Russia ranked 154th out of 160 countries, compared to Iceland, the safest country. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Russia is 6.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Iceland's remarkably low rate of 0.5. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Russia at 3.3 and Iceland at 0.6. The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that while both countries have similar scores for mafia presence (4.5), Russia scores higher in various crime categories, such as crime networks (7.5), state crime (8.5), and human trafficking (6.5), indicating a higher prevalence of organized crime. Overall, while tourism in Russia is possible, it is advisable for Icelandic tourists to exercise caution and stay informed about local safety conditions.
