Russia offers a diverse range of cultural and natural attractions that can be appealing to Greek visitors. While it attracts around 6.4 million foreign tourists annually, its appeal lies in the variety of experiences available. Given that 2 million Greeks travel abroad each year, a portion of them may find Russia to be an intriguing destination.
Russia presents a mixed safety profile for tourists from Greece. In terms of safety while walking alone at night, Russia ranks 30th out of 40 countries, which is similar to Greece's ranking of 32nd. However, the Global Peace Index places Russia much lower at 154th out of 160 countries, compared to Greece's 40th position, indicating a significant difference in overall safety. Crime statistics further illustrate this disparity. The murder rate in Russia is notably higher at 6.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Greece's 0.9. For female murders, Russia has a rate of 3.3, while Greece's rate is 0.6. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index shows that Russia faces challenges with organized crime, with indices indicating more severe issues in areas such as state crime (8.5 for Russia vs. 7.5 for Greece) and crime networks (7.5 for Russia vs. 6.5 for Greece). In summary, while tourists may find certain urban areas in Russia relatively safe, the overall safety landscape is less favorable compared to Greece, especially concerning violent crime and organized crime activities.
