Russia presents a compelling destination for some British travelers, thanks to its rich cultural and natural attractions. Although it attracts around 6.4 million foreign visitors each year, its appeal lies in the diversity of experiences it offers. With 19.1 million Britons traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Russia an intriguing option.
Russia's safety for tourists from the United Kingdom presents a mixed picture. In terms of walking alone at night, Russia ranks 30th out of 40 countries, which is safer than the UK, ranked 37th. However, according to the Global Peace Index, Russia is ranked 154th out of 160 countries, significantly less safe than the UK, which is 34th. Crime statistics indicate that Russia has a higher murder rate, with 6.8 per 100,000 people compared to the UK's 1.0. For female murders, the rates are 3.3 in Russia versus 0.6 in the UK. The Global Organized Crime Index also shows that Russia faces challenges with organized crime, with higher indices in several categories compared to the UK. For example, state crime in Russia scores 8.5 (worse) compared to the UK's 3.0. In summary, while some aspects of safety may be favorable for tourists in Russia, overall, it is generally less safe than the United Kingdom, particularly concerning violent crime and organized crime. Tourists should exercise caution and stay informed about their surroundings.
