Russia offers a rich blend of cultural and natural attractions, making it an intriguing option for some Bulgarian travelers. While it attracts around 6.4 million foreign visitors annually, its appeal lies in the diversity of experiences available. Among the 4.1 million Bulgarians who travel abroad each year, a segment may find Russia to be a compelling destination.
Russia presents certain safety concerns for tourists coming from Bulgaria. In terms of safety while walking alone at night, Russia ranks 30th out of 40 countries, which is lower than Bulgaria's ranking of 21st. Additionally, the Global Peace Index places Russia 154th out of 160 countries, significantly below Bulgaria, which ranks 26th. Crime statistics indicate a higher level of violence in Russia, with a murder rate of 6.8 per 100,000 people compared to Bulgaria's 1.3. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with Russia at 3.3 and Bulgaria at 0.8. When examining organized crime, both countries have similar scores for mafia presence (4.5), but Russia scores higher in areas such as crime networks (7.5), state crime (8.5), and human trafficking (6.5), indicating more significant challenges in these areas compared to Bulgaria. Overall, while travel to Russia is possible, tourists should remain vigilant and informed about safety conditions.
