Russia offers a rich array of cultural and natural attractions, making it an intriguing destination for some Azerbaijani travelers. With around 1 million Azerbaijanis traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Russia appealing among their options.
Russia presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Azerbaijan. According to safety rankings, Russia is 30th out of 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night, with no specific data available for Azerbaijan. The Global Peace Index ranks Russia 154th out of 160 countries, indicating it is less safe than Azerbaijan, which ranks 104th. In terms of crime statistics, Azerbaijan has a significantly lower murder rate at 1.9 per 100,000 people, compared to Russia's 6.8. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Azerbaijan at 1.3 and Russia at 3.3. The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights differences, with Azerbaijan generally scoring better across various crime categories. For example, Azerbaijan scores 5.5 for mafia groups and crime networks, while Russia scores 4.5 and 7.5, respectively. In categories like state crime and human trafficking, Azerbaijan scores 7.5 and 4.5, while Russia scores 8.5 and 6.5. Overall, while tourists from Azerbaijan can visit Russia, they should remain aware of the higher crime rates and safety concerns present in the country.
