Paraguay offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty, making it an intriguing destination for some Swedish travelers. Although it may not be widely recognized in global tourism, it presents a variety of experiences that reflect its diverse culture. With 4.2 million Swedes traveling abroad annually, there is potential for a portion of them to find Paraguay appealing.
Paraguay is generally considered a relatively safe destination for tourists, although it has higher crime rates compared to Sweden. According to the Global Peace Index, Paraguay ranks 71st out of 160 countries, while Sweden ranks 39th. In terms of murder rates, Paraguay has a significantly higher rate at 7.8 per 100,000 people compared to Sweden's 1.1. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with Paraguay at 1.9 and Sweden at 0.5. When looking at organized crime indices, Paraguay scores worse than Sweden in several categories, including crime networks (7.5 for Paraguay vs. 5.5 for Sweden) and state crime (8.0 for Paraguay vs. 2.5 for Sweden). While tourists from Sweden can visit Paraguay, they should remain vigilant and take standard safety precautions, as the crime environment is different from what they may be accustomed to in Sweden.
