Paraguay offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty, making it an intriguing option for some Guatemalan travelers. Although it is not widely recognized in global tourism, the country's diverse experiences could appeal to a segment of the 400,000 Guatemalans who travel abroad annually.
Paraguay is generally considered a safer destination for tourists compared to Guatemala. According to the Global Peace Index, Paraguay ranks 71st out of 160 countries, while Guatemala ranks 115th. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Paraguay is significantly lower at 7.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Guatemala's 20.0. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Paraguay at 1.9 and Guatemala at 6.1. The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights differences in crime dynamics, with Paraguay scoring lower in certain categories such as heroin trade (1.0 in Paraguay vs. 7.5 in Guatemala) and cocaine trade (7.0 in Paraguay vs. 8.5 in Guatemala). However, some areas, like state crime and foreign crime, show higher scores for Paraguay, indicating challenges that still exist. Overall, while Paraguay has its own issues, it is relatively safer for tourists compared to Guatemala.
