Although the popularity of the country has varied, recent trends show a gradual increase in foreign tourist arrivals. With around 700,000 Lithuanians traveling abroad annually, a portion of them may find Portugal an attractive option to explore.
Portugal is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Lithuania. It ranks 15th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, which is better than Lithuania's 24th position. The Global Peace Index further supports this, with Portugal ranked 7th out of 160 countries, compared to Lithuania's 31st ranking. In terms of crime statistics, Portugal has a lower murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Lithuania's 2.6. This trend continues with female murder rates, where Portugal has 0.6 versus Lithuania's 1.5. Regarding organized crime, while both countries face challenges, Lithuania generally has lower indices in various categories, indicating a higher level of organized crime compared to Portugal. For example, Lithuania scores 3.0 for foreign crime, while Portugal scores 5.0. Overall, tourists from Lithuania can feel relatively safe traveling to Portugal, as it has lower crime rates and is ranked higher in safety metrics.
