Portugal is a vibrant destination known for its rich culture and natural beauty, appealing to many tourists worldwide. Despite some fluctuations in popularity, recent trends show a gradual increase in foreign visitors. For a segment of Kenya's 54 million population, Portugal presents an intriguing travel option.
Portugal is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Kenya. It ranks 15th among 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night. According to the Global Peace Index, Portugal is the 7th safest country out of 160 worldwide, significantly safer than Kenya, which ranks 120th. In terms of crime statistics, Portugal has a much lower murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Kenya's 5.3. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Portugal at 0.6 and Kenya at 2.6. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Kenya faces higher levels of organized crime across various categories compared to Portugal. For example, Kenya scores 7.0 for mafia groups and 8.0 for state crime, while Portugal scores 4.5 and 4.5, respectively. Overall, tourists from Kenya can feel relatively safe when visiting Portugal, as it offers a lower crime rate and a more peaceful environment.
