Portugal is a vibrant destination known for its cultural richness and natural beauty, appealing to many tourists worldwide. Recent trends show a gradual increase in foreign visitors, highlighting its enduring attractiveness. Among the 1.8 million Finns who travel abroad annually, a notable portion may find Portugal appealing for their travels.
Portugal is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Finland. It ranks 15th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, which is lower than Finland's 8th place. However, according to the Global Peace Index, Portugal is ranked 7th out of 160 countries, making it one of the safest globally, although Finland ranks slightly higher at 13th. In terms of crime statistics, Portugal has a lower murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people compared to Finland's 1.6. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Portugal at 0.6 and Finland at 1.1. While both countries have their challenges, Portugal's crime indices from the Global Organized Crime Index suggest that it faces more significant issues with organized crime and trafficking compared to Finland. Nonetheless, overall, Portugal remains a safe and welcoming place for Finnish tourists.
