Panama offers a compelling mix of cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, positioning it as a notable destination in the region. With 10.4 million Thais traveling abroad annually, a segment of this population may find Panama appealing for its unique attractions.
Panama's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from Thailand, is a concern based on various crime statistics. According to the Global Peace Index, Panama ranks 94th out of 160 countries, while Thailand is ranked higher at 73rd. The murder rate in Panama is significantly higher at 12.7 per 100,000 people compared to Thailand's 4.9. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Panama at 2.0 and Thailand at 1.2. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Panama faces more challenges with organized crime, scoring 7.5 for mafia groups and 8.5 for cocaine trade, while Thailand scores better in these areas, with mafia groups at 1.5 and cocaine trade at 4.0. In summary, while Panama is a popular tourist destination, it is generally considered less safe than Thailand, with higher murder rates and more significant organized crime issues. Travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about local safety conditions.
