Panama offers a unique combination of cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, positioning it as a noteworthy destination in the region. With around 1 million Portuguese traveling abroad annually, a portion of these travelers may find Panama appealing for its diverse attractions.
Panama presents some safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Portugal. While Portugal ranks 15th in safety among European countries for walking alone at night, Panama lacks specific data for this metric. According to the Global Peace Index, Panama is ranked 94th out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Portugal's 7th place. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Panama is notably higher at 12.7 per 100,000 people, compared to Portugal's low rate of 0.8. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with Panama at 2.0 and Portugal at 0.6. The Global Organized Crime Index shows that Panama has higher scores in various crime categories, indicating a greater presence of organized crime and related issues. For example, Panama scores 7.5 for mafia groups and 8.5 for cocaine trade, while Portugal scores significantly better in these areas. Overall, while tourists from Portugal can visit Panama, they should be aware of the higher crime rates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
