Panama offers a compelling mix of cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, positioning it as a noteworthy destination in the region. With around 200,000 New Zealanders traveling abroad annually, a segment of these travelers may find Panama appealing for its unique attractions.
Panama has a higher crime rate compared to New Zealand, making it less safe for tourists. According to the Global Peace Index, Panama ranks 94th out of 160 countries, while New Zealand ranks 4th. The murder rate in Panama is 12.7 per 100,000 people, significantly higher than New Zealand's rate of 2.6. In terms of organized crime, Panama scores poorly on various indices, with mafia groups rated at 7.5 (compared to New Zealand's 4.5) and human trafficking at 8.0 (versus New Zealand's 3.5). Overall, while many tourists visit Panama safely, it is advisable for travelers from New Zealand to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
