Nicaragua boasts a captivating blend of stunning natural landscapes, including lakes and volcanoes, alongside a rich cultural heritage. While it attracts fewer tourists than larger destinations, its tourism sector significantly contributes to the local economy. Given that around 500,000 Cypriots travel abroad annually, a portion may find Nicaragua an appealing choice for their travels.
Nicaragua presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly those coming from Cyprus. While Cyprus is ranked 11th in safety among European countries and has a low murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people, Nicaragua's murder rate is significantly higher at 11.0. The Global Peace Index also reflects this disparity, with Nicaragua ranked 111th out of 160 countries, compared to Cyprus at 86th. Furthermore, various crime indices indicate that Nicaragua faces challenges with organized crime and violence. For example, the state crime index for Nicaragua is notably high at 9.0, while Cyprus scores a much lower 4.0. Other crime-related metrics, such as those for human trafficking and drug trade, also show Nicaragua scoring worse than Cyprus. In summary, while tourists can visit Nicaragua, they should be aware of the higher crime rates and safety concerns compared to Cyprus. It is advisable to take precautions and stay informed about local conditions.
