Nicaragua presents an appealing option for some Cuban travelers, showcasing a blend of cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes. While it attracts fewer tourists than larger destinations, its tourism sector is vital to the local economy. With around 300,000 Cubans traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Nicaragua an intriguing destination.
Nicaragua's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from Cuba, is a concern. According to the Global Peace Index, Nicaragua ranks 111th out of 160 countries, while Cuba is ranked higher at 96th. The murder rate in Nicaragua is significantly higher at 11.0 per 100,000 people compared to Cuba's 5.0. Crime statistics from the Global Organized Crime Index also indicate that Nicaragua faces more challenges, with indices showing higher levels of organized crime and state crime compared to Cuba. For instance, Nicaragua has a crime networks index of 6.5, while Cuba's is 2.5. Overall, while Nicaragua is a popular tourist destination, visitors should be aware of the higher crime rates and take necessary precautions.
