Nigeria is an appealing option for some Sierra Leonean travelers, given its vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes. While the country attracts a moderate number of tourists overall, there is potential interest among the approximately 100,000 Sierra Leoneans who travel abroad annually.
Nigeria presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Sierra Leone. According to the Global Peace Index, Nigeria ranks 144th out of 160 countries, indicating a lower level of safety than Sierra Leone, which ranks 64th. In terms of crime statistics, Nigeria has a significantly higher murder rate of 22.0 per 100,000 people, compared to Sierra Leone's 2.1. The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights disparities, with Nigeria scoring worse in various crime categories, such as crime networks (9.0 for Nigeria vs. 5.5 for Sierra Leone) and arms trafficking (8.0 for Nigeria vs. 3.5 for Sierra Leone). Overall, while travel to Nigeria is possible, tourists from Sierra Leone should be aware of the heightened risks and take necessary precautions.
