Nigeria is a vibrant and diverse country with a rich cultural heritage and beautiful landscapes, making it an intriguing option for some Gambians. However, it currently experiences a moderate level of tourist traffic.
Nigeria presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Gambia. According to the Global Peace Index, Nigeria ranks 144th out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Gambia's 81st position. The murder rate in Nigeria is reported at 22.0 per 100,000 people, whereas data for Gambia is not available. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates higher levels of organized crime in Nigeria, with scores reflecting more serious issues: mafia groups (5.5), crime networks (9.0), and various trafficking activities are notably higher than in Gambia. For instance, Nigeria scores 8.0 for arms trafficking and 7.5 for human trafficking, compared to Gambia's much lower scores. Overall, while tourists can visit Nigeria, they should remain aware of the safety risks and take necessary precautions.
