Nigeria is a vibrant and diverse nation with a rich cultural heritage and beautiful landscapes, making it an intriguing option for some Australian travelers. While the overall volume of tourist arrivals is moderate, a portion of the 300,000 Australians who travel abroad annually may find Nigeria appealing as a destination.
Nigeria presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Australia. According to the Global Peace Index, Nigeria ranks 144th out of 160 countries, while Australia is much safer at 19th. The murder rate in Nigeria is significantly higher, at 22.0 per 100,000 people, compared to Australia's 0.7. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Nigeria faces challenges with organized crime, scoring worse than Australia in several categories. For example, Nigeria has a higher score for crime networks (9.0 vs. 6.0) and state crime (7.5 vs. 2.0). Overall, while Nigeria has many attractions, potential visitors should be aware of these safety issues and take necessary precautions.
