Head of mission: Mr. Karl Hans Polzhofer, Honorary Consul (as of 2023)
Mozambique offers a unique appeal for Austrian travelers, featuring beautiful coastlines along the Indian Ocean and a rich cultural heritage. While it attracts a modest number of international visitors, its blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences is gradually enhancing its tourism appeal. With 7.5 million Austrians traveling abroad annually, there is potential interest among some of them in exploring Mozambique.
Mozambique presents certain safety challenges for tourists, especially when compared to Austria. While Austria is ranked 3rd in safety according to the Global Peace Index, Mozambique is ranked 106th out of 160 countries. The murder rate in Mozambique is significantly higher at 3.5 per 100,000 people, compared to Austria's low rate of 0.7. Crime indices also highlight concerns: Mozambique scores worse than Austria in various categories, including organized crime and state crime, with indices indicating a higher prevalence of crime networks and mafia groups. Tourists from Austria should exercise caution and stay informed about local conditions when traveling to Mozambique, as it is not as safe as their home country.
