Mexico offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, making it an appealing destination for international tourists. Its diverse tourism sector caters to various traveler preferences, solidifying its status as a popular global hotspot. Given that approximately 1 million Portuguese travel abroad annually, a portion of them may find Mexico an attractive option.
Mexico presents a different safety profile compared to Portugal for tourists. While Portugal ranks 7th in the Global Peace Index and has a low murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, Mexico ranks 136th out of 160 countries, with a significantly higher murder rate of 28.2 per 100,000 people. Additionally, crime statistics indicate that organized crime is more prevalent in Mexico, with high indices for various types of crime, such as mafia groups (9.0) and drug trafficking (cocaine trade at 9.0). In contrast, Portugal has much lower indices across these categories, indicating a safer environment. Tourists from Portugal should be aware of these differences and take necessary precautions when traveling to Mexico, as the safety landscape is considerably less favorable.
