Mexico offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, making it an appealing destination for international tourists. Its diverse tourism sector accommodates various traveler preferences, solidifying its status as a top global tourist destination. A portion of the approximately 100,000 Mauritians who travel abroad annually may find Mexico an intriguing option to explore.
Mexico's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from Mauritius, is a concern. According to the Global Peace Index, Mexico ranks 136th out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Mauritius, which ranks 22nd. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Mexico is notably high at 28.2 per 100,000 people, compared to Mauritius's much lower rate of 2.6. Additionally, female murder rates are 6.2 in Mexico versus 1.8 in Mauritius. The Global Organized Crime Index also highlights significant differences in safety. Mexico scores poorly on various indices, with mafia groups rated at 9.0 and crime networks at 9.0, while Mauritius scores much better at 2.0 and 6.0, respectively. Other areas of concern for Mexico include human trafficking (7.5), arms trafficking (8.0), and drug trade activities, where it scores between 8.0 and 9.0. Overall, while many tourists visit Mexico safely, it is essential for travelers from Mauritius to be aware of these safety concerns and take necessary precautions.
