Mexico offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, making it an appealing destination for international tourists. Its diverse tourism sector caters to various traveler preferences, solidifying its status as a top global tourist hotspot. Given that around 200,000 Maltese travel abroad annually, a portion of these travelers may find Mexico an intriguing option.
Mexico presents certain safety concerns for tourists, including those from Malta. While Malta has a low murder rate of 0.4 per 100,000 people, Mexico's rate is significantly higher at 28.2. The Global Peace Index ranks Mexico 136th out of 160 countries, indicating a challenging security environment. In terms of organized crime, Mexico scores poorly across various indices, with mafia groups rated at 9.0 (on a scale where 1 is best and 10 is worst) compared to Malta's 1.5. Other crime-related indices also show Mexico facing serious issues, particularly in drug trafficking and human smuggling. While many tourists visit Mexico safely, it is essential for travelers to stay informed, exercise caution, and take necessary safety precautions.
