Mexico offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, making it an appealing destination for international tourists. Its diverse tourism sector caters to various preferences, establishing it as a popular global hotspot. Given that around 100,000 Icelanders travel abroad annually, a portion of them may find Mexico an attractive option to explore.
Mexico presents a different safety landscape for tourists compared to Iceland. While Iceland ranks 3rd in safety among European countries for walking alone at night, there is no comparable data for Mexico. According to the Global Peace Index, Mexico is ranked 136th out of 160 countries, indicating a significantly lower safety level than Iceland, which is considered one of the safest. In terms of crime statistics, Iceland has a murder rate of 0.5 per 100,000 people, while Mexico's rate is much higher at 28.2. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with Iceland at 0.6 and Mexico at 6.2. The Global Organized Crime Index further illustrates the differences, with Mexico scoring poorly across various categories, such as mafia groups (9.0), crime networks (9.0), and human trafficking (7.5), compared to Iceland's much better scores (ranging from 1.0 to 5.0). In summary, while many tourists visit Mexico without incident, it is essential for travelers from Iceland to be aware of the safety concerns and to take appropriate precautions when traveling in Mexico.
