Mexico offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, making it an appealing destination for international travelers. Its diverse tourism sector caters to various interests, positioning it as a prominent global tourist hotspot. With 2 million Greeks traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Mexico an intriguing option for their travels.
Mexico's safety for tourists, including those from Greece, is a significant concern. While Greece ranks 40th in safety among European countries, Mexico ranks 136th out of 160 countries according to the Global Peace Index. The murder rate in Mexico is notably high at 28.2 per 100,000 people, compared to Greece's low rate of 0.9. Additionally, various crime indices highlight the challenges in Mexico, with organized crime and drug trafficking being particularly prevalent. For instance, Mexico scores poorly on the Global Organized Crime Index, with mafia groups rated at 9.0 (on a scale where 1 is best and 10 is worst), indicating a high level of organized crime activity. Overall, while many tourists visit Mexico safely, it is advisable for travelers from Greece to stay informed about safety measures and to exercise caution while traveling in Mexico.
