Mexico offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, making it an appealing destination for international tourists. Its diverse tourism sector caters to various traveler preferences, contributing to its status as a top global tourist hotspot. Given that 7.5 million Austrians travel abroad annually, a portion of them may find Mexico an attractive option for leisure, adventure, and wellness experiences.
Mexico presents safety concerns for tourists, especially when compared to Austria. While Austria is ranked 3rd in safety according to the Global Peace Index, Mexico is significantly lower at 136th out of 160 countries. The murder rate in Mexico is notably high at 28.2 per 100,000 people, compared to Austria's low rate of 0.7. Additionally, organized crime indices indicate that Mexico faces severe challenges, with high scores in areas such as mafia presence (9.0) and drug trafficking (9.0 for cocaine). Tourists from Austria should remain vigilant and informed about local conditions when traveling to Mexico.
