Frequently asked questions
How attractive is Mauritius as a destination for visitors from Portugal?
Mauritius is an appealing destination for Portuguese travelers, offering stunning beaches, lush scenery, and a rich cultural experience. With approximately 1 million Portuguese traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Mauritius an attractive option for leisure and adventure.
Please answer the following question: How safe is Mauritius for tourists coming from Portugal?
Mauritius is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Portugal. According to the Global Peace Index, Mauritius ranks 22nd out of 160 countries, indicating a relatively safe environment, although it is not as safe as Portugal, which ranks 7th. In terms of crime statistics, Portugal has a lower murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people compared to Mauritius's rate of 2.6. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Portugal at 0.6 and Mauritius at 1.8. When examining organized crime, Portugal scores better in various categories, such as mafia groups (4.5 for Portugal vs. 2.0 for Mauritius) and arms trafficking (4.0 for Portugal vs. 2.0 for Mauritius). However, Mauritius does have some challenges, particularly in drug-related crimes, such as a higher score for heroin trade (8.0 for Mauritius). Overall, while Mauritius is relatively safe, tourists should remain vigilant and take standard precautions, as crime rates are higher than in Portugal.
