Mauritius is an appealing destination for Canadian travelers, offering pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and a rich cultural experience. With 5 million Canadians traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Mauritius an attractive option for leisure and adventure.
Mauritius is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, ranking 22nd out of 160 countries on the Global Peace Index, compared to Canada's 11th place. However, while the overall safety is relatively high, some crime statistics indicate that Mauritius has a slightly higher murder rate (2.6 per 100,000) than Canada (2.1 per 100,000). In terms of organized crime, Mauritius scores lower in several areas compared to Canada. For example, the index for mafia groups is 2.0 in Mauritius versus 5.0 in Canada, indicating a lower presence of organized crime. However, Mauritius has higher scores in areas like crime networks (6.0) and human trafficking (4.5) compared to Canada. Overall, while Mauritius is safe for tourists, it is advisable for visitors to remain vigilant and take standard safety precautions, as they would in any foreign country.
