Mauritius is an appealing destination for some Batswana, offering stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and a rich cultural experience. Its unique attractions cater to various interests, making it a worthwhile option for a segment of Botswana's population of 3 million.
Mauritius is considered a relatively safe destination for tourists, including those coming from Botswana. According to the Global Peace Index, Mauritius ranks 22nd out of 160 countries, making it safer than Botswana, which ranks 49th. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Mauritius is significantly lower at 2.6 per 100,000 people, compared to Botswana's 10.5. Additionally, the rates of female murders are also lower in Mauritius (1.8) than in Botswana (7.6). The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights that while both countries face challenges, Mauritius generally has lower indices for organized crime compared to Botswana. For example, Mauritius has a mafia group index of 2.0 versus Botswana's 1.0, and lower rates of certain crimes such as arms trafficking and fauna crime. Overall, tourists from Botswana can feel relatively safe when visiting Mauritius, given the lower crime rates and overall safety rankings.
