Mali offers a unique blend of history and culture that appeals to adventurous travelers. While it attracts a relatively small number of visitors each year, those who do come tend to engage deeply with the local culture and landscapes, resulting in high spending per visitor. Given that 33.5 million Americans travel abroad annually, there is potential interest among some of them in exploring Mali as a destination.
Mali is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to the United States. According to the Global Peace Index, Mali ranks 151st out of 160 countries, while the United States ranks 130th. Although specific murder rates for Mali are not available, the U.S. has a murder rate of 6.8 per 100,000 people. The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Mali faces significant challenges with crime, scoring worse than the U.S. in several categories, including state crime (8.5 for Mali vs. 5.0 for the U.S.) and resource crime (7.5 for Mali vs. 4.5 for the U.S.). Overall, potential travelers from the United States should exercise caution and stay informed about the current security situation in Mali.
