Libya offers a unique and largely unexplored tourism experience, featuring diverse landscapes, rich historical sites, and a beautiful Mediterranean coastline. While its tourism infrastructure is still developing, it could attract a segment of the 6.1 million Swiss travelers who venture abroad annually.
Libya is generally considered unsafe for tourists, including those from Switzerland. While Switzerland ranks 7th in safety for walking alone at night among European countries, Libya ranks 126th out of 160 countries on the Global Peace Index. This indicates a significant difference in safety levels. Crime statistics further highlight these concerns. Switzerland has a very low murder rate of 0.5 per 100,000 people, while data for Libya is not available. The Global Organized Crime Index shows that Libya scores poorly in various crime categories, such as mafia groups (8.0), state crime (8.5), and human trafficking (9.5), compared to Switzerland's much lower scores (e.g., 4.5 for mafia groups and 1.5 for state crime). Overall, tourists should exercise extreme caution when considering travel to Libya, as it does not offer the same level of safety as Switzerland.
