Latvia offers a compelling destination for some Estonian visitors, thanks to its rich culture and natural beauty. With a strong tourism infrastructure and a strategic location, it attracts a portion of the 600,000 Estonians who travel abroad annually.
Latvia is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those coming from Estonia. However, it ranks lower in safety compared to Estonia in certain areas. For instance, Latvia is ranked 25th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, whereas Estonia ranks 4th. According to the Global Peace Index, Latvia is ranked 30th out of 160 countries, compared to Estonia's 24th position. In terms of murder rates, Latvia has a rate of 3.0 per 100,000 people, higher than Estonia's 2.0. The Global Organized Crime Index shows that both countries have relatively low scores, with Latvia having slightly higher indices in some categories, such as the cocaine and cannabis trade. Overall, while Latvia is safe for tourists, visitors should remain aware of their surroundings, especially at night.
