Latvia is an appealing destination for Canadian travelers, thanks to its rich culture and stunning natural landscapes. With a strong tourism infrastructure and a strategic location in Eastern Europe, it attracts a segment of the 5 million Canadians who travel internationally each year.
Latvia is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from Canada. According to the Global Peace Index, Latvia ranks 30th out of 160 countries, indicating a relatively safe environment, though it is less safe than Canada, which ranks 11th. In terms of walking alone at night, Latvia is ranked 25th among 40 European countries, but specific data for Canada is not available. Regarding crime statistics, Latvia has a murder rate of 3.0 per 100,000 people, compared to Canada's 2.1. Female murder rates are notably higher in Latvia at 3.6, versus 1.0 in Canada. The Global Organized Crime Index shows that Latvia has lower scores in organized crime categories compared to Canada, but both countries face challenges in areas like human trafficking and drug trade. Overall, while Latvia is relatively safe, tourists should remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, as they would in any country.
