Liberia is an emerging destination in West Africa that is starting to attract international interest. Although its tourism industry is still developing and generates modest revenue, it offers unique opportunities for cultural exchange. As such, it may appeal to a segment of South Africa's 60 million population.
Liberia is relatively safe for tourists, especially when compared to South Africa. According to the Global Peace Index, Liberia ranks 67th out of 160 countries, while South Africa is ranked 125th. The murder rate in Liberia is significantly lower at 3.3 per 100,000 people, compared to South Africa's 41.9. In terms of organized crime, Liberia generally fares better than South Africa in several categories. For example, mafia groups and crime networks score lower in South Africa (7.0) compared to Liberia (3.0 and 6.0, respectively). While no destination is without risks, overall, Liberia presents a safer environment for tourists than South Africa.
