Head of mission: Mr. Trabelsi Hichem, Honorary Consul (confirmed in the diplomatic list of Sri Lanka, 3 Dec 2024)
Sri Lanka is an appealing travel destination for some visitors from Tunisia, thanks to its rich cultural heritage and beautiful landscapes. The island offers tropical beaches and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which can attract a portion of the 700,000 Tunisians who travel abroad annually.
Sri Lanka's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from Tunisia, is a nuanced issue. According to the Global Peace Index, Sri Lanka ranks 99th out of 160 countries, which is lower than Tunisia's ranking of 72nd, indicating that Tunisia is generally considered safer. In terms of murder rates, Tunisia has a rate of 4.8 per 100,000 people, while Sri Lanka's rate is lower at 3.5. However, the rate of female murders is higher in Sri Lanka (2.2) compared to Tunisia (1.9). The Global Organized Crime Index shows that Tunisia scores better in several categories, including mafia groups and crime networks, with lower scores indicating better safety. For example, Tunisia has a score of 1.0 for mafia groups, while Sri Lanka scores 4.0. Overall, while Sri Lanka has lower murder rates, its overall safety ranking and organized crime indices suggest that it may not be as safe as Tunisia for tourists. Visitors should exercise caution and stay informed about local conditions.
