Sri Lanka is an appealing travel destination for some Malaysians, thanks to its rich cultural heritage and beautiful landscapes. The island offers tropical beaches and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making it attractive to a segment of the 34 million population in Malaysia.
Sri Lanka's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from Malaysia, shows some concerns. According to the Global Peace Index, Sri Lanka ranks 99th out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Malaysia, which ranks 10th. The murder rate in Sri Lanka is 3.5 per 100,000 people, compared to Malaysia's low rate of 0.7. Additionally, while both countries face organized crime, Sri Lanka has higher indices in state crime (7.0) compared to Malaysia (6.0). Overall, while many tourists visit Sri Lanka without incident, travelers should remain vigilant and informed about local conditions, as the safety landscape is not as favorable as in Malaysia.
