Sri Lanka is an appealing travel destination for some Finnish visitors, thanks to its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. With 1.8 million Finns traveling abroad annually, a portion may be attracted to its tropical beaches and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Sri Lanka's safety for tourists, including those from Finland, presents some concerns. While Finland ranks 8th in safety for walking alone at night among European countries, there is no comparable data for Sri Lanka. According to the Global Peace Index, Sri Lanka ranks 99th out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Finland's 13th place. In terms of crime statistics, Finland has a murder rate of 1.6 per 100,000 people, while Sri Lanka's rate is higher at 3.5. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with Finland at 1.1 and Sri Lanka at 2.2. The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Finland generally has lower crime indices across various categories compared to Sri Lanka. For example, mafia groups are rated 3.0 in Finland versus 4.0 in Sri Lanka, and state crime is rated 1.5 in Finland compared to 7.0 in Sri Lanka. Overall, while many tourists visit Sri Lanka safely, it is advisable for travelers from Finland to remain vigilant and informed about their surroundings.
