Sri Lanka is a unique travel destination in the Indian Ocean, known for its rich cultural heritage and lush landscapes. It appeals to international tourists with its tropical beaches and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Given that around 500,000 Chileans travel abroad annually, a portion of them may find Sri Lanka an attractive option to explore.
Sri Lanka is generally safe for tourists, including those from Chile, but it is ranked lower in safety compared to Chile. According to the Global Peace Index, Sri Lanka is ranked 99th out of 160 countries, while Chile is ranked 62nd. In terms of murder rates, both countries have similar figures: Chile has a murder rate of 3.6 per 100,000 people, while Sri Lanka's is slightly lower at 3.5. However, the female murder rate is notably higher in Sri Lanka at 2.2 compared to Chile's 0.7. The Global Organized Crime Index shows that both countries have similar scores for mafia groups (4.0) and crime networks (Chile 5.5, Sri Lanka 5.0). However, Sri Lanka scores higher in state crime (7.0) compared to Chile (4.5), indicating potential concerns in that area. Overall, while Sri Lanka has its challenges, many tourists visit safely each year. It is advisable for travelers to stay informed and take standard precautions while traveling.
